Atlanta, GA – Former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman has been transferred out of the federal penitentiary in Atlanta. He has been held at the Atlanta prison since he was sentenced on June 28th.
A spokesman for the federal prison system, Mike Truman, said Siegelman was transferred from the Atlanta prison. Truman said he could not say where Siegelman is going until after he arrives at a new facility.
Siegelman's attorney, David McDonald, says he understands Siegelman was transferred either late last night or early this morning. He says he has been unable to confirm reports being circulated on the Internet by Siegelman's supporters that he is being taken to the federal correctional institution in Texarkana, Texas.
That prison is a minimum security facility near the Texas-Arkansas line and is about 460 miles northwest of Montgomery.
Siegelman and former HealthSouth C-E-O Richard Scrushy were convicted last year of bribery and related charges in a government corruption case. Siegelman was sentenced to more than seven years in prison and Scrushy to almost seven years.
They have been sharing a cell at the Atlanta prison since they were sentenced.
Scrushy is still being held at the Atlanta prison.
