Rain Helps But Doesn't Relieve Drought

By Associated Press

Birmingham, AL – The latest U-S Drought Monitor Survey shows that the recent rains have helped relieve some of the worst drought stricken areas in Alabama, but it has not gone away.

The worst conditions still persist in northeastern Alabama counties - covering about 24 percent of the state.

The second worst conditions cover almost the northern half of the state. And, all the state still remains under some stage of drought. The survey bases its findings on impact, and drought specialists say its so severe, it will take more than a few days and a few inches of rain to provide serious relief.

The D-4 drought area in Alabama that stretches into a small part of Tennessee, continues to be the only region in the nation affected by the worst drought conditions.
