Oakdale, LA – Federal prison officials say former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman has arrived at a minimum security federal prison in Oakdale, Louisiana.
Siegelman is being held in a prison camp at the Oakdale complex in central Louisiana. That's about 470 miles by car from Siegelman's home in Birmingham. He arrived at the prison almost a week after being transferred from the federal penetentiary in Atlanta.
One of his attorneys, Susan James, says it appears the Oakdale prison will be his permanent prison home. She says it is more comfortable than the Atlanta prison.
That's where Siegelman and former HealthSouth C-E-O Richard Scrushy shared a small cell for two weeks after their June 28 sentencing.
Scrushy is still at the Atlanta prison.
Siegelman will not be the only former governor at the Oakdale prison. It is also home to former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards. Edwards is serving a ten-year sentence following his 2000 conviction on racketeering and conspiracy charges.
Siegelman and Scrushy were convicted last year of bribery and other charges in a government corruption case. Siegelman was sentenced to more than seven years in prison and Scrushy to almost seven years.
