Rail Car Plant Coming to Shoals Area

By Associated Press

Florence, AL – Colbert County in northwest Alabama landed a rail car manufacturing plant Wednesday that is expected to employ 18-hundred workers.

National Industries, the parent company of National Steel Car in Hamilton, Ontario, is opening the Alabama plant.

Governor Riley joined company Chairman Gregory Aziz for the announcement in Florence. Riley says the plant is the type of transformational economic development project that northwest Alabama has needed for some time.

Specific investment figures for the Alabama plant were not disclosed, but officials put it in the 350 million (M) million dollar range. The plant is expected to open in early 2009 with 18-hundred workers and the ability to produce eight thousand to ten thousand rail cars annually.
