Seoul, South Korea – The South Korean government Tuesday ordered Hyundai Motor Co. to recall more than 6,000 sport utility vehicles because of a faulty fuel pump it said could cause a fire in a head-on collision.
The Ministry of Construction and Transportation issued the recall order for 6,286 Veracruz SUVs, it said in a statement.
Hyundai spokesman Jake Jang said that the models subject to the recall were all equipped with diesel engines, which he said are only sold in South Korea.
"It doesn't affect any export vehicles," he said.
Hyundai began selling the Veracruz in South Korea in October. It began U.S. sales in March with a gasoline engine.
The ministry said that the recall is for Veracruz models built between Jan. 13 and June 12.
It also fined the automaker 200 million won (US$212,000; euro158,000).
