Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright to Run for Congress

Montgomery, AL – Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright will kick off a Democratic campaign for Congress on Tuesday in the southeast Alabama town where he grew up.

Bright announced today that he will launch his campaign at noon on the steps of the Dale County Courthouse in Ozark.

Bright is seeking to replace Republican Congressman Terry Everett, who is retiring from his 2nd Congressional District post. The congressional district covers much of southeast Alabama and stretches from Dothan to Montgomery.

Everett's retirement has already brought out several Republicans: state Senator Harri Anne Smith of Slocumb, state Representative Jay Love of Montgomery, state Representative David Grimes of Montgomery, and Dothan oral surgeon Craig Scmidtke.

Bright was one of 14 children raised on a cotton farm near Ozark. He became an attorney in Montgomery and was elected mayor in 1999. He was re-elected in 2003 and 2007.

Bright is running in a district that has been represented by Republicans since 1964.
