Birmingham, AL – Alabamians are waking to a chilly reception this morning after a flow of unseasonably cool air dropped overnight temperatures to below freezing.
Farmers across the state began bracing for the weather yesterday with the hopes of saving their crops from frost damage.
Angie Belligan of Culp Fruits in Chilton County said that they burned fires in the fields during an earlier frost scare, but they don't have the fuel to do it this time around.
Other larger growers used wind machines in the orchards and were prepared to use helicopters to keep the air circulating.
National Weather Service meteorologist Jody Aaron says the cold temperatures across central Alabama are the result of a powerful low-pressure system.
The temperature was expected to dip to 31 degrees in some areas.
Aaron said there have been much later freezes in Alabama, with the record low for April 14th being 29 degrees.
