Attorney General Says Siegelman Probe A Priority

Washington, D.C. – Attorney General Michael Mukasey says an internal Justice Department investigation into the agency's prosecution of former Alabama governor Don Siegelman should be completed by the time the Bush administration leaves office in January.

But he would not guarantee that its results will be made public.

Mukasey's comments came at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing as Senator Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, pressed him over allegations that Siegelman's prosecution was politically motivated. Siegelman, a Democrat, was convicted on corruption charges in 2006.

Mukasey said he believes the agency has made clearing the air in the case a top priority. He said the decision to release its findings would be made by internal investigators at the department's Office of Professional Responsibility.
