Nuclear Board Will Hear Arguments Against Reactor Applications

By Associated Press

Scottsboro, AL – The Atomic Safety Licensing Board is scheduled to begin hearing opposition to the Tennessee Valley Authority's application for a license for two nuclear reactors at its Bellefonte site.

The pre-hearing conference is set to be held in Scottsboro on Wednesday with testimony from several opponents.

BEST (Bellefonte Efficiency and Sustainability Team), the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL) and the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) have challenged TVA's application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Opponets claim it is in violation of the Atomic Energy Act and the National Environmental Policy Act. The citizens groups combined to file a petition of intervention with the NRC on June 6.

The board will hear arguments about the timeliness and admissibility of approximately two dozen contentions submitted with the petition.
