Auburn Gets Web Cams

Auburn, AL – A new feature on the City of Auburn's Web site offers live video from six downtown intersections, courtesy of newly installed Web cams.

Jim Buston, the city's chief information officer, said the cameras, especially the one at Toomer's Corner, will give Internet browsers a glimpse of postgame celebrations even if they can't be there.

Buston said the cameras will also give the city a chance to try out a new wireless ``mesh'' network downtown.

He said police will be able to switch seamlessly from the city's network to a cellular one.

Burton said it's also a good way for people to monitor traffic. The city spent $100 on each camera and $30 on each enclosure.

Buston said the city thinks the cameras will be worth the investment.
