Ala. Drought Situation Shows Improvement

Birmingham, AL – Alabama's drought situation continues to improve, but two areas of the state remain a concern.

The latest survey released Thursday by the U.S. Drought Monitor show there are no D-4 or exceptional drought areas in the state.

The report stated there was a reduction in extreme drought conditions across Alabama this week from 15 to 13 percent. Those areas are mostly concentrated in central and northeast counties.

Severe drought decreased from 49 to 48.5 percent and overall drought conditions were down from 97 to 84 percent.

In a related matter, Alabama Power Co. said it will reduce releases from its hydroelectric dams to minimum . The utility said in a statement lake levels are expected to be 1 to 2 feet below average for Labor Day, but higher than at this time last year.
