Montgomery, AL – A Texas State University professor's study ranks Alabama 7th for having one of the nation's worst scorecard for efforts to keep litter off their highways.
But a couple of state officials question the findings of Steve Spacek's study that shows seven of the top 10 states with the worst records are below the Mason-Dixon Line.
Mississippi ranked at the top of the list.
Alabama lawmakers created a commission this year to look at what more can be done to clean up the state's roadsides.
The most recent statistics showed that only about 200 citations for littering were issued in 2005.
But George Conner, whose division at the Alabama Department of Transportation is responsible for litter control, said the study doesn't measure how much litter falls along the highways.
