AG Eric Holder To Attend Selma Bloody Sunday Event

Birmingham, AL – U.S. Rep. Artur Davis has announced that newly confirmed Attorney General Eric Holder has accepted his invitation to take part in Selma's Bloody Sunday event next month.

Holder is the nation's first black attorney general. The annual Bloody Sunday event commemorates the first attempt at a Selma-to-Montgomery march to push for passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.

Marchers were attacked by troopers and deputies as they attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The assault drew widespread outrage and helped lead to passage of the law.

Davis announced Holder's participation during an event Thursday at Birmingham-Southern College.
