Birmingham, AL – U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, an early supporter of Barack Obama with uncanny similarities to the new president, is seeking to make history too.
Davis announced his Democratic candidacy for governor Friday in a bid to be the first black to win Alabama's top office.
The 41-year-old, Harvard-educated lawyer ended months of speculation over his plans at a noon announcement in Birmingham. He spoke to a downtown crowd made up largely of whites, whose votes will be crucial if he has any shot at victory in 2010.
