Montgomery, AL – Alabama legislators are trying again to pass several bills on illegal immigration that died last year.
The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee approved bills Tuesday that would require adults to prove their lawful residence before getting some types of public assistance.
The bills would also require companies getting state economic development benefits to certify they don't employ illegal immigrants and ban cities from passing ordinances to protect illegal immigrants from deportation.
They would require companies getting state contracts to certify that they don't hire illegal immigrants.
Similar bills won approval from Senate committees last year, but the bills did not make it all the way through the Legislature.
