Birmingham, AL – The Birmingham-based Bruno's Supermarkets could be on the verge of closing.
Bankrupt and trying to find a buyer, the grocery chain has notified its 4,200 workers of plans to shut down stores and eliminate jobs if a purchaser isn't found.
The company already has announced plans to close 10 of its 66 stores, and it said Monday it has no current plans to close more stores. But it also has said it could liquidate if it can't find a purchaser.
Bruno's wants a bankruptcy judge to void its union contacts, a move the company said could help attract a buyer. A union that represents Bruno's employees is opposing that request.
Bruno's has stores in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
