Opelika, AL – A BFGoodrich tire plant in east Alabama is closing, a decision that will cost about 1,000 jobs.
Executives met with employees at the BFGoodrich plant in Opelika on Monday to inform them that the factory will shut down permanently by Oct. 31.
The move will cost about 800 hourly jobs and another 200 management positions.
The chief operation officer of BFGoodrich, Scott Clark, blamed the decision on decreasing demand for tires. He said demand for replacement tires has declined three of the last four years.
The decision doesn't affect the company's plant in Tuscaloosa or Fort Wayne, Ind., which employ about 1,500 people each.
The Opelika factory has been open since 1963.
