Montgomery, AL – A state representative has given a donation to the American Cancer Society which he says equals a legislative pay raise he received this year.
Democratic Rep. Lea Fite of Jacksonville gave the cancer society a check for $1,805 in a ceremony outside the Alabama House Chamber Wednesday.
At least 10 House members have declined to receive the pay raise, mostly citing the state of the economy.
But Fite said he decided to pass the raise on to the cancer society. Fite's wife, Judy, is a survivor of breast cancer and he said he felt giving the money to fight cancer would be a better use than leaving it in the state treasury.
American Cancer Society government relations director Ginny Campbell accepted the donation from Fite.
