Birmingham, AL – University of Alabama at Birmingham officials have decided to drop two departments from the schools of business and social and behavioral sciences as part of a restructuring plan.
Under the proposal by the system's academic affairs committee, the school of business will go from four departments to three and the school of social and behavioral sciences will drop from six departments to five.
On Friday, the finance committee of the UA System Board of Trustees approved plans to raise tuition for medical students by 9 percent and for dental students by 15 percent. Tuition for the optometry school will rise 8 percent.
UAB Provost Eli Capilouto said the move will save the schools $1.6 million total.
The system's full committee will vote on the restructuring proposal and tuition increase Friday.
