Montgomery, AL – An Alabama Senate committee has stopped a bill that would have allowed home-schooled students to play sports and participate in other extracurricular activities in public schools.
The bill by Republican Sen. Hank Erwin of Montevallo failed in the Senate Education Committee 5-6 on Wednesday. Erwin had named his bill the ``Tim Tebow Act'' in honor of the University of Florida quarterback who was home schooled.
Erwin said the bill would not impose a burden on schools, but state education officials said the bill is unworkable because there are no academic standards for home-schooled children.
