Gov. Riley Signs Ala. Education Budget

Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley has signed the $6.2 billion education budget into law.

Riley's signature Monday wraps up work on one of the two state budgets for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1. The state's General Fund budget for non-education programs has been approved by the House and is supposed to be up for consideration in the Senate on Tuesday.

Riley said the education budget should avoid layoffs for teachers and school support workers. That was possible because of federal stimulus funds.
