Hammett Says He Will Not Seek Another Term

Montgomery, AL – Alabama House Speaker Seth Hammett says he is retiring from the Legislature and will not seek a record fourth term as speaker.

Hammett of Andalusia took the microphone in the closing seconds of the 2009 regular session Friday. He told House members he had consulted with his family and decided not to run for re-election to his south Alabama House seat.

Hammett has served in the House since 1978 and has been speaker since 1998. He and former Speaker Jimmy Clark are the only three-time speakers in Alabama history.
