Tuscaloosa – This week (6/9/09), APR News is exploring the issue of unemployment in a series titled "Hard Times in Alabama". First, we'll look at why Alabama turned down a portion of federal stimulus money meant to expand unemployment benefits. The Governor's office didn't want that funding for fear of overextending the Unemployment Trust Fund and triggering new business taxes. That provoked talk of a legislative battle that never happened.
