Ala. Growth Tops In U.S. In Advanced Placement Program

Birmingham, AL – A new report shows that Alabama schools showed more growth than anywhere in the nation in participation and performance on Advanced Placement tests during the past school year.

Gov. Bob Riley and education leaders announced the numbers from the College Board report Tuesday while visiting Clay-Chalkville High School. The school is one of 12 Alabama schools that took part in a special program to increase the number of AP exams passed in math, science and English. The program also benefitted five other states.

The number of Alabama students taking the tests rose 24.5 percent, compared with a 7.5 percent rise nationally. There was a 21.1 percent increase in the number of AP test scores that qualified for college credit, compared with a national increase of 9.4.
