Gov. Riley Creates Committee For Census Count

Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley is creating a committee to push for an accurate census count next year.

Riley said Friday he signed an executive order establishing the Alabama Complete Count Committee.

The committee will include representatives of state and local government, community and faith-based organizations, new media, and businesses. It will be headed by the director of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs, Doni Ingram. The goal of the group is to inform Alabamians about the importance of being counted next year.

State officials estimate that more than 53,000 Alabamians weren't counted in the last census. Ingram said a similar undercount in 2010 could result in Alabama losing about $546 million in government funding over the next decade.
