Montgomery, AL – The state government's freeze on merit raises for state workers has been extended for one more year.
State officials imposed the freeze about a year ago because of declining tax revenue. Gov. Bob Riley's communications director, Jeff Emerson, said Monday the governor asked the state Personnel Board to extend the freeze through December 2010, and the board agreed.
Emerson said the state can't afford merit raises now.
Many state employees who have not reached the top of their pay scales can normally qualify for annual raises for meritorious service.
