Washington, D.C. – Rep. Parker Griffith - the north Alabama congressman who switched to the Republican Party last month - has lost most of his staff.
In a resignation statement, Griffith's chief of staff Sharon Wheeler said Griffith's 5th District economy has benefited from decades of Democratic representation in Washington. She said Griffith ``abandoned the legacy'' of conservative Democratic leadership in the region from former lawmakers such as Bud Cramer and Howell Heflin.
Among others joining Wheeler in resigning were several legislative aides and spokesman Sean Magers.
Griffith, a former state senator who narrowly won the congressional seat last year, said last month he could no longer align himself with the Democratic agenda in Washington.
