Ala. Senate Leader Won't Retire, Seeks 8th Term

Montgomery, AL – One of Alabama's most influential legislators, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Hank Sanders of Selma, has changed his mind about retiring and will run for an eighth term this year.

The veteran Democrat had announced last year that he would retire after 27 years in the Legislature. But he said Wednesday he changed his mind at the urging of many friends and constituents.

Among them was State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton, who said Sanders has used his position to increase funding for the Alabama Reading Initiative and programs to boost student success in math, science and technology.

Many senators and lobbyists attended his announcement in the Senate chamber.
