Ala. Gets $240 Million US Navy Contract

Mobile, AL – A Republican Alabama senator says the U.S. Navy has awarded $204.2 million to Austal USA, in Mobile, for its Joint High Speed Vessel contract.

The JHSV is a joint Navy-Army program for a high-speed, shallow draft vessel intended for rapid cargo transport. This funding is for the second and third ships.

U.S. Senator Richard Shelby made the announcement in Washington. He says the vessel can rapidly transport personnel, equipment, and supplies together, decreasing land-based choke points and maintaining unit integrity.

The JHSV reaches speeds up to 45 knots. It will include a flight deck for helicopter operations and an off-load ramp that will allow vehicles to quickly drive off the ship.
