Montgomery, AL – A state General Fund budget approved by a legislative committee will fund most state agencies with close to what Gov. Bob Riley recommended.
But the budget approved by the panel Wednesday gives the Legislature and courts more than the governor recommended, and it gives the governor's office less than Riley sought. It also ignores the governor's request to eliminate special projects for legislators.
The measure approved by the House Government Appropriations Committee spends nearly $1.6 billion from the General Fund for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.
Committee Chairman John Knight of Montgomery said he hopes to bring up the budget for debate in the House on Tuesday. Then it would go to the Senate.
