Montgomery, AL – Alabama has elected a Republican governor in five of the last six elections for the post, but a July runoff to pick a GOP candidate this time may be determined by the party's political foes - Democrats hoping to play a key role.
Voters who cast ballots in the Democratic primary on June 1 can legally cross over and vote in the Republican runoff July 13.
The GOP front-runner, Bradley Byrne, is accusing Paul Hubbert of trying to hijack the runoff by encouraging Democrats to cross over. He says Hubbert wants to defeat him.
Hubbert is executive secretary of the Alabama Education Association and vice chairman of the state Democratic Party. Hubbert says AEA has informed its members that the Republican runoff is open to anyone. But he says AEA hasn't decided what role, if any, it will take in the runoff.
