Birmingham, AL – Many Alabama merchants are saying the weekend state sales tax holiday produced about as much business as last year and perhaps more.
Nancy Dennis, director of public relations for the Alabama Retail Association, said Sunday that one retailer from the Birmingham area reported being ``way over the top'' from last year's sales tax holiday. Several sales clerks or managers at Birmingham area stores say they saw mixed results.
During the event, the state sales tax was waived on clothes, books and other school supplies around Alabama, as well as in the boundaries of 267 cities and counties around the state.
Some local governments, including Jefferson County, chose not to remove their sales taxes. The tax holiday ended Sunday.
