Montgomery, AL – Alabama officials say the heatwave that's blanketed the state since May has hurt farmers markets across the state.
Don Wambles, director of the Alabama Farmers Market Authority, says sales at farmers markets around the state are off about 6 percent. He says some markets, like the one at Bridge Street in Huntsville, are shutting down abruptly. Others are losing vendors daily.
For DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison and Marshall counties, the decline in sales has been slightly worse than the statewide figure at 7 percent.
Marilyn Champion, who raises a wide range of vegetables and fruits on about 25 acres near Falkville, says people just aren't buying in bulk.
