Atmore, AL – Attorneys for Alabama death row inmate Michael Jeffrey Land are looking to the U.S. Supreme Court to halt his execution for the 1992 killing of a woman abducted from her Birmingham home.
The Alabama Supreme Court denied Land's request for a stay, leaving the U.S. Supreme Court as his last chance.
Land, now 41, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Thursday at Holman Prison in Atmore.
He was convicted of capital murder for fatally shooting 30-year-old Candace Brown in the back of the head after kidnapping her. Brown's 2-year-old son, Michael, was left alone in the house when she was abducted. He was found by police the next day.
