Mobile, AL – Alabama's Department of Health says Mobile County leads the state in the number of public school students without required immunization certificates.
School officials in Mobile say the information is faulty because it was collected at a time last fall when many student records were being transferred or updated.
The state says 7,267 of the 64,000 public school students in Mobile County had no immunization certificates on file at the start of the 2009-10 year.
Second-place Jefferson County counted 611 such students.
Alabama law stipulates that children in day cares and Head Start programs, and students in public and private schools, must provide up-to-date immunization certificates prior to enrollment.
