BP Using Heavy Machinery on Ala. Beaches

By Associated Press

Orange Beach, AL – BP is bringing out the heavy equipment to remove oil that's buried on Alabama beaches.

The company has gotten permits to use trackhoes to remove oil that's buried 6 inches deep or more in Baldwin County. The machines can reach out into the water with long arms to remove tar balls buried near the surf line.

As the beach cleanup continues, workers are getting ready to remove the boom that was strung out in Perdido Bay to prevent oil from getting on to islands and into grassy areas.

Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon is worried that BP is leaving the area too soon even though local officials are still dealing with the fallout of the Gulf spill.
