Bentley Leads Sparks 4-1 In Ala. Gov. Fundraising

Montgomery, AL – Republican Robert Bentley is raising money in the race for governor four times faster than Democratic opponent Ron Sparks.

The candidates seeking the state's top office in the Nov. 2 election filed campaign finance reports Monday showing how much they had raised since winning their parties' nominations.

Bentley reporting taking in more than $3.3 million in contributions. Sparks listed more than $783,000.

It was a big change for Bentley, a retired Tuscaloosa physician who largely self-financed his primary campaign. Many of his contributions came from the business and medical communities, including $100,000 from the state medical association and $25,000 from the state dental association.

Sparks' contributions included more than $100,000 from the Alabama Education Association.
