Ala.'s Bachus Challenged For US House Post

Birmingham, AL – Alabama's Rep. Spencer Bachus is being challenged for the top spot on the House banking committee by a fellow Republican.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., says he wants to be chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, a slot assumed to belong to Bachus after he spent four years as ranking minority member.

Bachus has battled speculation that some Republicans are unhappy with his work on the committee because they think he is not standing up sufficiently to Democratic Chairman Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass.

Bachus appears to have the upper hand with the recent endorsement of the Republican leaders of the panel's six subcommittees.
