Tuscaloosa, AL – The Alabama Legislature's top fiscal expert is predicting another year of across-the-board budget cuts because money isn't coming in as quickly as the Legislature had planned.
The director of the Legislative Fiscal Office, Joyce Bigbee, said Tuesday her preliminary estimates are that the governor may have to cut 2.3 percent from the education budget and 8.5 percent from the General Fund budget for non-education agencies.
The governor had to cut the education budget 9.5 percent in fiscal 2010 and the General Fund budget about 10 percent.
Gov. Bob Riley's communications director, Jeff Emerson, said the governor is concerned about the budgets but is not planning to order cuts right now.
