Ala. Rep. Sought Democratic Post Before Switch

Montgomery, AL – One of the Democratic legislators who recently switched to the Republican Party had been seeking a leadership position among Democrats at the statehouse.

The Montgomery Advertiser reports that Rep. Lesley Vance of Phenix City sent Democratic legislators a letter seeking the position of House minority leader. The letter was sent two weeks before Vance switched to the Republican Party.

Vance says he sent the letter because some top Democratic legislators asked him to do it, but he says he had no real interest in being the minority leader. Vance said he had no thoughts of switching parties when he sent the letter Nov. 5.

He was one of four Democratic legislators who changed parties on Nov. 22.
