Sen. Marsh Elected Leader Of Alabama Senate

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Senate has selected Republican Sen. Del Marsh of Anniston to its top leadership post.

The unanimous vote to elect Marsh president pro tem occurred at the start of a special session Wednesday. The Senate's new Republican majority had recommended Marsh for the post. Marsh, an Anniston businessman, replaces Democratic Sen. Rodger Smitherman of Birmingham as president pro tem. He will preside over the Senate in the absence of the lieutenant governor.

The Senate also voted unanimously to make its assistant secretary, Pat Harris, the next Senate secretary. He will replace McDowell Lee, who is stepping down Feb. 1 after nearly 48 years as the Senate's top staff member.
