Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Board of Education has extended the contract of state school Superintendent Joe Morton.
The board voted 6-0, with two abstentions, Thursday to extend the contract by two years. Morton was named head of Alabama's Department of Education in 2004.
He asked the board not to increase his $197,963 salary because he wouldn't feel right getting raise ``when education in Alabama is hurting so badly.'' The contract will run through December 2012.
