Single-Digit Wind Chill Grips Alabama

Birmingham, AL – Frigid temperatures are causing problems across north Alabama.

Ten school systems closed or opened late Monday because of wind chill readings in the single digits and the possibility of slick roads after scatterd winter precipitation. In Huntsville, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center told workers that nonessential employees could take a leave day without prior approval.

Dozens of people showed up at the city auditorium in Birmingham overnight seeking shelter as stiff winds combined with subfreezing temperatures made it feel like it was below 10 degrees at times.

Forecasters say temperatures won't make it out of the low 30s across north Alabama on Monday, and winds will keep gusting to 30 mph. Another hard freeze is forecast for early Tuesday.
