New GOP Leader In Alabama Senate Cuts Payroll

Montgomery, AL – The new president pro tem of the Alabama Senate, Republican Del Marsh of Anniston, says he's slashing spending.

Marsh announced Wednesday that the staff is dropping from 40 to four, and the payroll will fall from $1.8 million last year to less than $200,000 this year.

Marsh's top assistant, chief of staff Philip Bryan, will be paid $75,000 annually. That compares to $120,000 that was paid previously for the post.

Marsh said the $3 million annual budget for the president's pro tem office has been a slush fund for senators in the past, but he's instituting guidelines on what senators can spend from the budget.
