Birmingham, AL – Alabama's new census figures show two congressional districts will need significant changes.
An analysis by The Birmingham News shows the 7th Congressional District that stretches from Birmingham to Selma is about 80,000 short of the desired population of 683,000 people. The district is represented by Democrat Terri Sewell of Birmingham. It will have to be enlarged to add more people.
The 6th District that covers much of metropolitan Birmingham is more than 71,000 above the desired population. The district is represented by Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus of Birmingham. It will need some areas carved out and moved to other congressional districts.
It will be up to the Alabama Legislature to decide how to make the changes.
