Montgomery, AL – The first bill to make it all the way through the 2011 session of the Alabama Legislature will redesign how the state education budget is written to try to prevent midyear budget cuts.
The Republican-controlled Senate voted 23-10 Thursday to give final passage to the bill. The next step is a bill signing by Gov. Robert Bentley, who supported the legislation.
The bill by Republican Rep. Greg Canfield will end the practice of basing the education budget on revenue projections. Instead, it will be based on revenue trends over the past 15 years.
The Alabama House spent Thursday debating legislation that would end deferred retirement benefits for state employees and education workers.
