Ala. Tornado Losses Put At Up To $4.2 Billion

Montgomery, AL – An Alabama insurance official says the tornadoes that struck late last month could be the costliest natural disaster in the state's history.

Ragan Ingram, the state Department of Insurance chief of staff, said Monday that insured losses from the tornadoes could reach $6 billion in the Southeast, with 70 percent of the losses in Alabama.

Ingram says the numbers on are based an estimate by Risk Management Solutions, an international catastrophe modeling company.

The estimate of total insured losses in the Southeast from tornadoes between April 25 and April 28 ranges from $3.5 billion to $6 billion, putting insured losses in Alabama between $2.45 billion and $4.2 billion.

The estimate says a tornado that hit Tuscaloosa and traveled to Birmingham accounted for 40 percent of the damage in the Southeast.
