Designing Districts Hard For Alabama Legislature

Montgomery, AL – Designing new political districts is proving difficult for the Alabama Legislature.

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee voted unanimously Tuesday to make changes in the state school board redistricting plan passed by the House last week. The changes were in Montgomery and Autauga counties. They increase the number of black voters in Democrat Ella Bell's 5th District and decrease the number of black voters in Republican Stephanie Bell's 3rd District and Republican Betty Peters 2nd District

The House Constitution, Campaigns and Elections Committee voted Tuesday to reject a congressional redistricting plan passed by Senate. Instead, it went back to a plan the committee approved a week ago. The main differences are how the plans design Republican Mike Rogers' 3rd District and Republican Spencer Bachus' 6th District in counties near Birmingham.
