Montgomery, AL – It's going to cost more for the state and local governments to remove debris that's still remaining from the April tornadoes.
Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley says federal officials are ending a program that paid 90 percent of the cost of removing debris from public areas. Bentley had asked the federal government to extend the program, but it's ending after Tuesday.
The federal reimbursement rate now drops to 75 percent, with the state and local governments splitting the remaining 25 percent.
Bentley says work to remove all of the estimated 10 million cubic yards of public debris will continue despite the change. The state estimates less than 20 percent of that debris remains to be cleaned up.
