Montgomery, AL – State school officials are one step closer to hiring a new superintendent after sifting through seven applications for the job.
The state Board of Education started reviewing candidates Tuesday afternoon. The applications were given to the board by Brenda Welburn, executive director of The National Association of School Boards of Education. The group was hired by the state to help with the search.
Welburn said the seven-person pool was the smallest she had ever seen. There are other similar positions open around the country, which might have contributed to the low number of applicants. No local superintendents from Alabama were among those being reviewed by the board.
Former Superintendent Joseph Morton retired Aug. 31 after seven years at the state's top educator. The salary range is $150,000 to $250,000.
